Four alternative measures of multiple correlation for ordinally scaled data are discussed: Goodman and Kruskal'sgamma, Somers'dyx, Kendall'stau-c, and a new measure,gamma-k. They differ in their assumptions about the circumstances in which predictions should be evaluated, and also in their properties.Gammaanddyxmay both decrease in value, implying a reduction in predictability, with the introduction of an additional predictor. By contrast,tau-candgamma-kdo not fall in value.

A field concept of social organization is proposed as an alternative to systems theory with special reference to the case of the community. Field notions in physics, biology, and psychology are shown to reflect a view of reality as emergent and dynamic. The concept of the field is distinguished from the method of field analysis. The assumptions of interactional theory are taken as a frame of reference for delineating characteristics of the social field. Contributions of ecological, cultural, and psychological factors are noted, but the social field is described as having a distinctive existence. Theoretical and methodological implications of conceptualizing the community as a social field are discussed, and the concept of the community field is elaborated.

The 1960 SMSAs are examined to determine if the delineations of these areal units, for which a major share of federal statistics are produced, correspond to the operational criteria established by the Federal Committee of the Budget Bureau. It is found that there exist numerous deviations from the purported standards, and that these discrepancies occur in evaluation on the basis of the criteria of requisite population, the criteria for area titles, and the criteria of integration. The discrepancies in integration are particularly disappointing since the 1960 Census was the first to yield commuting data.The most logical explanation for these anomalies appears to be that considerations other than statistical accuracy enter into the decision-making process of federal government statisticians (just as military needs are sometimes viewed as a less important factor in decisions affecting Defense Department installations than political expediency). Social scientists should be aware of this.

Blue-collar couples from a working-class suburb and from a working-class urban district are compared on a number of life-style variables. Suburban families are more likely than urban families to adopt life-styles resembling the middle class as indicated by measures of local intimacy, social isolation, family organization, church activity, orientations to social mobility and political perspectives. Controls for background variables and social-class identification do not appreciably alter these relationships. The analyses also reveal differential adaptations by husbands and wives to suburban residence—thus illustrating some of the problems in generalizing from findings that do not systematically account for sex of respondents. In conjunction with previous research the findings underline a need to reassess the frequently reported assumption that class values are the prime determinants of life-style regardless of residence.

Evidence from a series of national samples shows no decline in working-class identification in the United States since 1945. The disagreement between these results and those of Tucker for 1963 appears to be the consequence of different question wordings and an implicitly different conceptualization of “class.” The Tucker question prompted the modal respondent to rank himself in terms of an evaluative dimension rather than to identify himself with a group. The 1963 study probably gives a minimum estimate of “working-class consciousness”; this interpretation is more consistent with evidence from the other studies.

A divorce rate by marriage cohort for each year married up to ten years is developed, using data from the Divorce Registration Area. The results differ considerably from the period divorce rate, the divorces in a year per1,000married women. The period rate declined from11in 1948 to9in 1958 and then increased in the next nine years back to11, forming a “U.” During this period, the cumulative percent divorced of cohorts married nine years has been fairly stationary. There were15.8divorces per100for the cohort married nine years in 1958. By 1964 this rate had increased irregularly1percentage point to16.8. Since then, the rate for those completing nine years of marriage has increased only to17.5, showing remarkable stability.

The generalization that there exists a direct relationship between bureaucratization and alienation is modified by examining the relationships between five bureaucratic characteristics and six forms of alienation among samples of hourly paid workers, salaried managers, and independent businessmen. The data do not support the broad generalization that such a direct relationship exists, but some patterns of relationships are suggestive for future research: (1) bureaucracy may be directly related to alienation among blue-collar workers, but not among salaried managers or independent businessmen; (2) the authority dimension of bureaucracy is more closely related to measures of alienation than other bureaucratic characteristics among hourly paid workers; and (3) that form of alienation most closely related to bureaucratization among hourly paid workers is self-estrangement.

This paper investigates whether there is some relationship between students' political orientations and their knowledge of the findings of social science. Data on students enrolled in social science courses at four colleges reveal that those with relatively high scores on a test of social science knowledge tend to be politically more liberal and to be more involved with politics than others. The findings are interpreted in part as the result of certain attitudes and beliefs which students have prior to encountering social science information and in part as a consequence of becoming knowledgeable in social science. The study suggests the fruitfulness of further inquiries into the role of cognition in political life in general and the role of social science knowledge in ideological life in particular.

An empirical measure of religious belief—the Orthodoxy Index—has drawn criticism on both theological and methodological grounds. Analysis of the theological criticisms shows them to be irrelevant to sociological pursuits. Furthermore, new survey data based on 1.580 ministers from9major Protestant denominations in California suggest that the methodological criticisms may be frivolous. The Index satisfies normal criteria of validity equally well among clergymen as in prior studies based on laymen. Finally, it is shown that the Orthodoxy Index is interchangeable with minister's personal theological self-conceptions.
