摘要:
Both critics and defenders tend to regard structural-functionalism as a single school with a distinct identity and a common strategy. This paper argues that the illusion of unity has obfuscated the debate. It suggests that structural-functionalism harbors at least two quite different approaches. While both are “legitimate,” they lead to different conclusions and different vulnerabilities. Thus, it matters whether one is primarily concerned with thestructural partor thesystematic whole. In each case there are advantages and disadvantages, but charges of Panglossian unity, illusions of indispensability, static analysis, and ideological conservatism do not apply equally to both. Each is exposed to biases, but the biases are not the same.

摘要:
The staff of the Las Palmas School for Girls expressed a desire for a system other than psychiatric diagnosis for assigning girls to differential treatment modalities. TheInterpersonal Maturity Levelsystem was incorporated into the classification procedures of the institution and was found to be pragmatically useful. The major advantage of the system is that it suggests staff styles, treatment modalities, and etiological aspects oftypesof delinquents based upon perception and behavior. An effort was made to objectify the identification of I-Level types through a Q-factor analysis of a psychological inventory. The attempt failed; however, the Q-analysis helped uncover covert manipulators early in the institutionalization process and appeared to be a step forward in the development of an objective, general typological system.

摘要:
Scores are obtained for 27 notable men on eight factor analytically derived scales including “Government Scope,” “Involvement in the Cold War,” “Attitudes toward Minority Groups,” and the like. The study suggests that the notables drawn from different walks of life are viewed by a well-educated national sample in terms of a single composite scale which is identified as “liberalism-conservatism.” The views attributed to the notables are examined. In general the men are perceived accurately by the respondents; however, there is greater accuracy in evaluating the notables' positions on domestic than on foreign issues.
