Five demographic characteristics—education, income, sex ratio, age, and percentage of children—were compared with the percentage of vote pro-integration. Higher income and education were found to correlate positively at a very significant level with a higher vote percentage. Significant correlations with sex ratio, age, and percentage of children were found only in the moiety of precincts highest in percentage of vote pro-integration.

The role of the civil rights issue in the 1960 presidential election was investigated through a survey of the voting intentions of 130 Negroes and 147 whites in a southern city. The civil rights issue proved to be of central importance in the decisions of the Negro voters. The white voters, on the other hand, tended to make their decisions on other grounds, and the civil rights issue played a much lesser role. This was due not to indifference toward the issue but rather to the belief that the stands of Nixon and Kennedy were equally unacceptable. Thus Kennedy was able to attract a majority of Negro voters by adopting a somewhat more militant stance than his opponent on civil rights without alienating a large number of southern whites, who tended to regard any differences between the candidates on civil rights as insignificant.

Socioeconomic and legal changes in the position of southern Negroes have been accompanied by a changing pattern of race relations and a new attitude on the part of Negro leaders. Data from a closed-answer questionnaire administered to students in three Negro colleges in North Carolina support the hypothesis that sit-in protests are less indicative of social alienation among Negroes than of their identification with or positive reference to the white middle class.

The hypothesis that cognitive simplicity is positively related to prejudice was tested indirectly with data on college students. The relation of tolerance (measured by questions regarding desegregation of the campus) to both accuracy and similarity in perceiving the attitudes of others (measured on Crespi thermometers) was evaluated by Student's t-test. Intolerant students were less accurate in predicting the responses of others and showed a greater tendency to perceive others' responses as like their own.

Myrdal's thesis with regard to race relations in American society is examined conceptually to bring out its underlying normative assumptions concerning the nature of social integration and of social change. An alternate interpretation of race relations in American society is offered, based upon assumptions that are more structural and less normative in character.

After investigation, such behavior is explained in terms of the functional requirements of family, school, and other primary social systems which are dysfunctional to national educational systems.

This paper is a multi-level explanation of the “kibbutz crisis.” Due to widespread structural differentiation in Israel since 1948 the kibbutzim, as a group of concrete collectivities, have been “specialized” relative to the adaptive problem and are now primarily units of the economy. Pressures are placed on the kibbutzim to subordinate communal moral-integrative norms to rational criteria and production effectiveness. The diverse repercussions of this dilemma are described and analyzed in kibbutz Mayeem Kareem.

The role position of the staff nurse is examined with reference to the levels of norm obligations attached to expectations of specific and qualitative behaviors. Responses were obtained to hypothetical situations involving patients, doctors and other nurses. Certain relevant aspects of the nurse's role situation were varied and held constant in order to discover possible generalized role qualities.

The assumed relationship between role performance and expectations is tested for discharged female psychiatric patients. A positive relationship is found between both sets of expectations and all areas of posthospital performance. Even though the relationship between level of expectations and performance level is affected by psychiatric and sociological variables, the significant relationship between expectations and performance still remains when the intervening variables are controlled. A central issue of interpretation is raised in the form of a “corrosion” hypothesis: the role theory assumption that performance is a function of expectations may be only partially explanatory; the opposite possibility that expectations are adjusted to suit the performance level of the patient must also be taken into account.

The extent and nature of the association between chronological age and activity and between activity and morale are explored empirically. Some qualifications of the association frequently posited between these pairs of variables are suggested. Subjects are 250 noninstitutionalized persons 60 years of age and over participating in a longitudinal study of human aging.
