Regardless of results from empirical research, the treatment of an offender is affected by any imagined relationship between a given parole prediction item and the probable success or failure of that offender on parole. Respondents from ten professional groups representing various points of the correctional spectrum were asked to assess the relevance of 20 items for predicting a man's success on parole. Their responses were combined into indicators of optimism and accuracy.Utilizing a macroscopic format, with the units of analysis being positions rather than individuals, a set of concepts and a rationale for exploring perceptual correlates are outlined. Ten hypotheses and the 14 indicators used to test them are presented. While some modification of our rationale is required, the evidence is supportive of the general relevance of structure and role to the dependent variables.
