AbstractThe authors briefly review the effects of adolescent motherhood on mothers and their infants. The components of mother-infant interaction are summarized. Teaching mothers effective nurturing behaviors is presented as part of an intervention plan that can be implemented in a school setting. Three programs that teach effective parent-infant interaction as a part of their intervention with adolescent mothers and their infants are discussed.

AbstractUsing data from a telephone “warmline,” the authors identify three recurrent problems children face: loneliness when home alone, peer pressure, and relationship difficulties. Suggested school and agency responses include a planned socialization program that emphasizes self-esteem and teaches problem-solving, self-reliance, and social skills, and community supports such as telephone services and adequate child care resources to serve younger children.

AbstractThe academic self-esteem of 138 pupils in kindergarten through grade three was rated by 12 student teachers who completed the Behavioral Academic Self-Esteem (BASE). Analyses of variance were performed for sex, race, and family configuration (single- or two-parent). Children from single-parent families had academic self-esteem that was perceived to be significantly lower than their counterparts on BASE's five subscales and total score. The need for schook to identify and respond to the special needs of children from single-parent families is discussed.

AbstractResidential relocations mean losses and disrupted security for millions of children. Their parents are stressed by changes in employment and family composition. The negative effects on children may be prevented by supportive group-orientation services for families who have recently relocated. A program model for school-family agency collaboration is described.
