AbstractThis article reviews the critical area of preventing adolescent dysfunctioning, and it elucidates issues pertinent to providing preventive health services for adolescents. Two empirically documented models for helping adolescents are proposed and exemplary programs are reviewed.

AbstractTeen pregnancy and AIDS are fostering great interest in sex education. School social workers can play potentially key roles in establishing sex education programs that address sex education as a continuing process of meaningfully integrating sexuality that should be a part of every person's basic education for life. A statewide survey of schools provided important information to assist school social workers in advocating for sex education programs based on a broad concept of sexuality and not limited to facts on sexual reproduction.

AbstractServices to teenage parents generally focus on the needs of mothers and infants, without addressing the concerns of teenage fathers. The needs of fathers are reviewed, along with attitudinal, knowledge, and skill barriers to the provision of services. Intervention strategies are suggested to help school social workers meet the needs of young fathers in community-based and alternative school programs.

AbstractThe contribution of primary prevention strategies to school social work is recognized widely, but little attention has been devoted to the preventive aspects of adolescent substance abuse. Current federal, state, and local drug abuse initiatives present an ideal opportunity to expand the value and credibility of the social work profession. Recent programming trends in this area are reviewed and emerging strategies for school social workers to promote are discussed.
