AbstractThe author classifies the factors within the child, home, school, and community that may contribute to truancy. The classification schema can serve as a tool to guide school social workers in assessing the etiology of truancy in individuals and developing approaches to prevention through early intervention.

AbstractA study found discrepancies between the perceptions of school staff and truant students regarding the factors that lead to truancy and how effective the courts are in dealing with this problem. School social workers should try to resolve such conflicting perceptions as well as to develop new strategies for intervention with truants.

AbstractThe authors describe an effective truancy diversionary program in which parents were given the option of enrolling the truant child in an informal program of intervention rather than attending a formal court hearing. The program produced a significant reduction in the number of students referred to the court for truancy a second time.

AbstractThe author describes a behavioral group program that uses contingencies paired with punishment-free conditions to reduce truancy. The program, which was conducted with frequently truant junior high school students, increased attendance and suggests that a behavioral approach can be effective with truants.

AbstractBecause truancy involves a context of relationships that are associated with the child, the family, and the school, family systems theory offers school social workers a useful approach to practice with problems of nonattendance. The authors supply five guidelines to contextual intervention at various levels and offer case examples.
