The Naval vessel at sea is described as a total institution of the type that justifies itself on instrumental grounds. The structure and function of the formal and informal shipboard organizations, and the expectations therein of the role of the sailor, are discussed. Special attention is given to the processes by which the individual is assimilated into the shipboard society, and to his behavioral modifications of the expected role.

An analysis of the suicide and homicide rates of 48 countries is made to determine whether national suicide and homicide rates, on the one hand, and the relation between the rates, on the other, are related to economic development. The research hypothesis was supported in the finding that suicide rates tend to be high and homicide rates tend to be low in countries of high economic development and that suicide rates tend to be low and homicide rates tend to be high in countries of low economic development. The evidence indicates that economic developmentas measured by urbanization and industrialization—bears a fairly constant relation to the relative frequencies of suicide and homicide. It is thus concluded that suicide and homicide should be considered causally separate social phenomena.

In the United States a low urban sex ratio has been attributed to industrialization and the consequent demand for female labor in urban centers. Japanese cities, however, have not attracted a disproportionately female population in spite of heavy industrialization. On the other hand, Philippine cities now show a sex ratio similar to the United States although industrialization is in the beginning stages. Japanese cultural patterns have maintained female subordination in spite of a potential industrial demand for female labor. Socioeconomic forces in the United States have directed women workers into supplementary rather than fully equal occupational roles. Filipino culture has favored occupational participation by women on a basis equal or superior to the male with the result that a slight movement toward industrialization stimulates a heavy migration to the cities.

The harnessing of youth into one monolithic organization is a constant preoccupation of totalitarian states. Such states succeed in channelling through the youth organization all the socially mobile and career oriented adolescents. On the other hand, the overt stress on ideological conformity accounts for much exploitation of the organization for advancing personal careers, especially when the organization has been imposed from above, as in Czechoslovakia.
