摘要:
AbstractAdolescent substance abuse is increasing at an alarming rate, and national trends indicate that the average age when chemical experimentation occurs has decreased. Chemical abuse interferes with the student's ability to learn and to perform academic tasks; teachers cannot teach students who are unresponsive because of chemical use. Because adolescents spend the greatest number of waking hours in school, it is the most appropriate setting for identification of and intervention with chemically dependent students. School social workers are in a position to determine the nature and level of a student's chemical involvement. Training in assessment and intervention with substance-abusing students will enable school social workers to educate staff on the early identification of such students. Early intervention with chemically involved students can stop the progression of this disease and help students seek treatment before serious consequences occur.

摘要:
AbstractThis article describes trends and problem indicators relating to the rapidly increasing population of youths at risk for educational failure who will, in turn, fail in the labor market. Schools and other social institutions—the family, the community, the media, and the state and federal governments—have failed to socialize and integrate youths. In response to this failure, the authors challenge all community systems to address the multitude of social problems facing youths by collaborating to develop comprehensive, coordinated health education programs including substance abuse prevention efforts at the community, state, and federal levels. Components of effective prevention efforts, conclusions from model prevention programs, and implications for social workers in school settings are discussed.

摘要:
AbstractThe authors present their Comprehensive Systems Collaboration (CSC) model, which facilitates collaboration among school, alcohol and drug treatment, and other systems to coordinate services and plan strategies to help alcohol- and drug-affected students. The model provides a comprehensive approach to the recovery process of such students. This article explains the goals of the CSC model, the role of the school social worker, and the practical material used to assist professionals in establishing and using this model.

摘要:
AbstractFamilies and Schools Together (FAST) is a substance-abuse prevention program that focuses on elementary school children identified as at risk by classroom teachers. FAST uses a whole-family approach, serving as many as 10 families at a time, and actively recruits families that were previously not coming to the school. The program is a collaborative effort that involves community agencies and parents as partners. FAST addresses the factors that correlate with adolescent substance abuse; the authors describe these factors and the results of the program to date.
