AbstractWhen children lack certain cognitive skills, they likely will be unable to perform the associated social task or exhibit expected classroom behaviors. As an early identification and prevention program, a social work-constructed, five-step psychoeducational program based on Piaget's theory of cognitive development was developed for first- and second-grade students in an inner-city, private school of a predominantly black population.

AbstractThe promise of adulthood may be unfulfilled for autistic children if the developmental milestones of childhood are not reached and the critical skills required for adulthood are not taught. The author proposes a school-family-community partnership in which school social workers serve as case coordinators, family advocates, and home interventionists.

摘要:
AbstractThe use of group therapy as a process to strengthen the independence of students with retardation is addressed. A group model is presented for approaching the task of improving these students' independence. Four group foci are presented: (1) remediation, (2) socialization, (3) education, and (4) growth. One or all four foci could occur simultaneously during the group model process. In addition, four themes intertwine with the group foci: (1) self-esteem, (2) age-appropriate behavior, (3) self-expression, and (4) original thought. Experiences in using the group model also are presented.
