AbstractSchool social workers should be aware of the vital and versatile role consultation can play in their practice. The authors examine the history and nature of consultation and use examples from their own experience to illustrate the use of consultative techniques with teachers and other colleagues in the educational system.

AbstractThe effectiveness of structured as opposed to nonstructured groups in the teaching of problem-solving skills to acting-out adolescent girls was tested with junior high school students. Following ten weekly treatment sessions, the structured group was found to have fewer disciplinary referrals and a reduction in tardiness.

AbstractThere is a need for social workers to develop pregnancy prevention programs in the schools. As a model for such programs, the authors describe how a voluntary community agency used drop-in centers and individual and group counseling for both boys and girls in New York City junior and senior high schools.

AbstractBecause the behavior disorders of children can have multiple roots, assessment must address all the significant systems and relationships in the child's life. The author proposes the ecological perspective as a framework for assessment, reviews the scales that can assist in this process, and outlines intervention strategies.

AbstractAlthough child study teams seek to help create unrestricted classroom environments for handicapped children, a team's activities can create tensions that work to the detriment of both child and school. A systems approach to the role of teams can help all concerned to avoid and alleviate problems in this important area.

AbstractA frequently overlooked resource in the classroom is the potential of the children themselves to help others. In a study of one peer-helper program, the authors found that the training of students as peer facilitators had a positive effect both on the helpers and on the children who were being helped.
